Attention: These plants are poisonous for your cat

12.06.2019
Cats are playful and curious animals that like to spend a lot of time with their environment. They also like to inspect and taste plants. Unfortunately, many plants are incompatible or even poisonous for cats and can lead to death in the worst case. If you have houseplants or balcony plants, you should always find out first if there is any danger for your cat before you buy them. Veterinary surgeries provide extensive lists of all poisonous species.

10 common plants that are highly toxic to cats:

  • Lilies
  • Chrysanthemen
  • Cyclamen
  • Oleander
  • Christrose
  • Ivy
  • Azaleas
  • Misteltoe
  • Tulips
  • Poinsettia

Even the extremely popular orchids are not harmless, as there are an unmanageable number of cultivars nowadays, not all of which are tested or have been treated with strong pesticides. Even at Christmas time, poisonous plants often enter the home unnoticed as an addition to flower arrangements and Christmas wreaths.

To make your cat accustomed to nibbling on plants, you can put catnip in the apartment or on the balcony. Boredom can also be a trigger for cats to get involved with plants. A scratching post or enough toys can take your four-legged friend to other thoughts. If you don't want to part with an existing plant and still can't stop your cat from doing so, you'll have to find an inaccessible place in the apartment or on the hallway. An alternative is a hanging hanging hanging hanging basket.

Signs of poisoning include tremors, salivation, vomiting, diarrhea, respiratory paralysis, impaired motor coordination, drop in blood pressure and paralysis. Some poisons show their effects after only a few minutes, others only after more than 12 hours. At the first sign of the poison a vet should be consulted immediately - if possible you should take the nibbled plant remains with you. Emergency care at home is not possible due to the different types of poisonous plants.
