Tips for the vet visit - how to keep your dog relaxed
A visit to the vet with your dog often means stress for everyone involved. You are worried, because usually the first thing you notice is a change in the behaviour of your four-legged friend. Many dogs react anxiously to strangers, unfamiliar smells and the other patients in the veterinary practice. But with a good preparation you can counteract this a bit and make it easier for both you and your dog to go to the vet.
Veterinary training
Prepare your dog in everyday life again and again playfully for the visit to the vet. You will kill two birds with one stone. Firstly, your dog learns that the groping touches are not bad. Secondly, you can check the coat, skin, ears, eyes, teeth and mucous membranes for changes.
In doing so, introduce signals for the different parts of the body. For example, say "ears" when you look at the ears. Praise your dog when he accepts the touch and remains calm. You do this gradually with all body parts.
If you have an anxious dog that does not like to be touched by strangers, it is advisable to get your dog used to a muzzle before the first visit to the vet. Also carry out the muzzle training in small steps.
The visit in the veterinary practice
It is advisable to make an appointment with the vet if your dog is free of complaints. This has the following advantages:
The dog can get to know the practice and the people there without immediately associating this new environment with pain or discomfort. The examination can be done in peace and quiet. You help your dog with the previously trained signals. Praise him again and again when he is calm.
Furthermore, this first visit is a good opportunity to discuss any special features such as previous illnesses or behavioural problems with the vet.
If the worst comes to the worst
If your dog falls ill or has to undergo a routine checkup, you are well prepared and can look forward to the visit to the vet much more relaxed. Your dog will thank you when he has a relaxed mistress or master at his side to help him get well quickly.
